Flying Falcons Go 3-0 in Rain Shortened Tournament

On a rain soaked start to tournament weekend, the Flying Falcons played hard against a determined Marlboro home team Friday evening. With rain pouring down the entire game, the Falcons took the field and played hard the entire first half. After Marissa Mancuso got fouled in the penalty box, she returned the favor by drilling a penalty kick past Marlboro’s goalie for the 1-0 lead.

Jenny did a great job in goal, although the Falcon’s defense, lead by Sophie, gave Jenny few opportunities to even touch the ball. Ten minutes into the second half, Julia hit a great shot, past Marlboro defenders for the 2-0 lead. The game continued with both sides fighting hard and with 3 minutes left in the game, Maggie took a ball from 30 yards out and dribbled past multiple Marlboro defenders, to take a great shot for the 3-0 lead and the Falcons first win of the weekend.

On Saturday morning, the Falcons picked up right where they left off, this time against Pennisula. Ten minutes into the game, Shelly took the ball and dribbled down in front of the Pennisula goal and made a great pass to Rebecca, who tapped in the ball for the 1-0 lead. Paige, who played great all day, took the ball ten minutes later and did nearly the same play, bringing the ball down in front of the goal and then passing it to Rebecca for the second goal of the day. At halftime, the score was 2-0.

The second half got underway, with both sides playing hard. After a Pennisula goal, Michele took the ball into the penalty box and hit a great shot that ricocheted off the goalie allowing Ava to slam the ball right back into the goal for a 3-1 lead. With five minutes left in the game, Grace took the ball all the way to the goal and hit a left footed shot that sailed into the Pennisula goal for the final score of 4-1.

After a break for bagels in the rain, the Falcons took the field for their game against Hazlet United. This game will be remembered for the torrential rain that fell the whole first half. Twelve minutes into the game, Rebecca hit a great corner kick that Maggie smacked into the goal for the 1-0 lead. Grace and Sophie kept the ball on Hazlet’s side of the field for most of the first half. At half time a 30 minutes rain delay was announced. After the conclusion of the delay, the rest of the day’s games were cancelled, leaving the Flying Falcons with a perfect 3-0 record in the tournament.
