Flying Falcons Have Great Weekend

In a pair of games this weekend, the Flying Falcons were spectacular with a win and a come from behind tie.

The excitement began on Friday evening in Holmdel. After multiple delays and reschedulings, the Falcons finally took the field against Holmdel. With the setting sun shining brightly, the Falcons dominated on each side of the soccer ball, right from the start. With Sophie in goal to start the game, the Falcon offense and defense pounded away at Holmdel. Rebecca played sweeper to start the game, but moved up front during the first half. At 28 minutes into the game, Rebecca scored for the 1-0 lead. Ava played hard all half, bouncing off of, and controlling the ball from Holmdel. The first half ended with the score 1-0.

Eighteen minutes into the second half Rebecca passed the ball to Alex, who took the ball right into the Holmdel goal for the 2-0 lead. The Falcons held the field the rest of the game, with strong performances from Marissa, Shelly and Amanda. The whistle blew, and the Falcons had won the game 2-0.

In the second game of the double header weekend, the Flying Falcons took the field Sunday afternoon in Barnegat, against the Alliance HERicanes. With temperatures in the high 80’s, the Falcons played welll right from the start. In a very evenly matched contest, the Falcons played hard, but by the end of the first half, were down 1-0. Julia and Sophie did a tremendous job of keeping the ball away from the Falcon’s goal. With the help of oranges and a pep talk from Coach Tom, the Falcons took the field for the second half. The HERicanes got a quick goal, and the Falcons found themselves behind 2-0. Twenty minutes into the second half, Maggie scored on a great kick, taking the ball past multiple defenders. Pumped by this first goal of the day, the Falcons then scored 4 minutes later when Rebecca hit a powerful shot that slammed into the opponent’s goal. The two teams played hard for the next 10 minutes with opportunities for scoring on both sides of the field. Jenny did a great job in goal stopping many shots that would have been goals.  After fighting off a last ditch effort by the Alliance, the Falcons punted the ball out of their end, as the ref blew the whistle for the end of the game. Although the game ended in a tie, the Falcons were elated, with the sideline feeling like it was actually a win.
