Flying Falcons Dominate in Win over Freehold

Sunday April 20, 2008 - Month of practice continued to pay off as the Flying Flacons looked spectacular in their second straight win of the season. The Falcons played as a team, beating back an aggressive Freehold lineup. Emma got the action started 10 minutes into the game with a towering shot that sailed over the Freehold goalie’s head. The Falcons kept the pressure on the entire first half. Jenny did a great job in goal, batting out many attempts by Freehold to get on the board. Shelly repeatedly punted Freehold attempts right back to their side of the field. The Falcon’s passing game was evident with Sophie, Grace and Marissa keeping the ball moving up the middle. Rebecca did a great job controlling the sideline game. The first half ended with the score, Falcons one and Freehold zero.

At half time, the Falcons were joined by Alex who was sitting the game out due to complex and painful tooth surgery. Alex delighted her teammates by showing them all her stitches.

The Falcons started the second half, just as they ended the first, by keeping the ball on Freehold’s side of the field. Amanda came in at left wing and did a great job punching the ball into Freehold’s 18 yd line. At 19 minutes into the second half, Ava broke from the Freehold defender and charged with the ball, to the goal.  She kicked the ball toward Freehold’s left goal post. Not being sure if it would go in, Ava shouted to Maggie to kick the ball and Maggie did, delivering the final blow that sent the ball sailing into the back of the net.

Freehold played a very aggressive game. Shannon did a great job and kept pushing back, not giving up ground to her opponent. One defender in particular gave the Falcons a bit of trouble. At one point, when she got pushed too hard, Megan pushed back and kept the Freehold defender pinned into her own corner. Michele was aggressive up and down the field, at one point even using her head to keep the ball away from Freehold. Julia controlled the middle of the field, continually finding Falcon feet to pass the ball to as the referee blew the whistle for a 2-0 Falcon victory.

For her great success, on both offense and defense, Sophie was named the $10,000,000 player of the game. Coach Tom announced that Emma, and the tag team of Ava and Maggie, were the Pichichi award winners for the game.
