Sunday November 18 - On a cold, dreary and cloudy day, the Flying falcons shined brightly with a commanding win over Monmouth Coast.
The Falcons had reason to be concerned before the start of the game. They were playing this final game of the Fall 2007 season down two people. Grace Timko was not at the game and Coach Tom was not able to be there either. Any initial trepidation was calmed 3 minutes into the game as Ava Sardoni drilled a line drive into the net for an early 1-0 lead.
The defense played stong right from the start. Mishell Buanocore, Shannon Crehan, Alex Oldock and Marissa Nardelli made excellent passes and kept the ball off the Falcons side of the field for the entire first half. 17 minutes into the game, Maggie Wasacz had a huge, towering kick from 25 yards out, that scored for the Falcons’ second goal of the game. While fans were still talking about that goal, 2 minutes later, Maggie popped another ball past the Monmouth Coast goalie for the team’s third goal of the day.
Five minutes later, at the 24 minute mark, Rebecca Malos got a great assist from Emma Korolik to score the Falcons’ fourth goal of the first half. While midfielder Amanda DeSarno was all over the Monmouth Coast players, playing excellent offense and defense, Flying Falcons waiting on the sideline, kept warm with an assortment of blankets brought by Mrs. Lozowski. The first half ended with the Falcons holding a 4-0 lead.
Having seen very little action in the first half, goalie Jenny Guerriero was ready to come out and play offense. Megan Gray and Amanda DeSarno started the second half as the Falcons complete front line. Megan and Amanda helped pound the ball down inside the 18, in front of the Monmouth Coast goal, most of the second half. They were helped with excellent passing and crossing from Julia Malos and Michelle Whelan. Sophie Lozowski stepped into goal for the second half, doing a wonderful job, stopping everything that Monmouth Coast tried.
During halftime, Alex Oldock promised a goal, given the chance. She kept that promise at the 45 minute mark with a great goal drilled into the corner, past the Monmouth Coast goalie. Jenny pounded an excellent shot into the Monmouth Coast goal at the 50 minute mark for the Falcons to finish their season with a 6-0 win.
With a cold wind picking up, there was just enough time at the end of the game for Coach Joe and Coach Jim to announce that Maggie was the winner of the Pichichi award for the game, with two goals. Also, the coaches explained that Shannon was the $10,000,000 player of the game. Lastly, Mrs. Lozowski told everyone that there will be a team get together at the Lozowski home on December 2nd, with details to follow.
